The Solution has as a key component a Rating Engine that has the functionality to receive data from devices installed in vehicles. The devices record where, when and how the vehicles are driven and remit the information to the Rating Engine. The Rating Engine manipulates this data in such a manner to produce vehicle use profiles. These vehicle use profiles are used as the basis for computing insurance ratings.
Tracking Devices are manufactured, marketed and installed by device providers. Not all devices are manufactured to deliver the same degree of rating proficiency. Consequently, devices deliver various grades of vehicle performance data. Some devices now have an accelerometer built in that enhance the quality of the data for insurance rating.
The devices are manufactured with firmware which enables the devices to determine how and when they must transmit messages to the server of the device provider. This firmware should be such that it is capable of being modified remotely by device providers.
